B.O.B.

You start your workday at home with a VR headset on. Everything seems normal until your screen is flooded with pop-ups, notifications, and flashing alerts. In a matter of seconds, your calm digital workspace spirals into chaos.

B.O.B. (2024) is a 360-degree VR experience that immerses you in the overwhelming noise of digital overstimulation. How long can you last before the pressure becomes too much?

Created by me and a team of classmates, the project is a collaborative exploration of media overload. Together, we conceptualized and designed the visuals, sound, and interaction to make the emotional weight of constant digital input tangible.

Meaning of B.O.B.

Business Oculus (Home) Based explores the psychological effects of constant digital interruption in a hyperconnected world. As notifications compete for your attention and your focus is continuously hijacked, the experience highlights the mental fatigue and anxiety caused by media saturation.

The project serves as a critique of our relationship with technology asking how much digital input is too much, and what it does to our sense of control, productivity, and peace of mind. By confronting users with this sensory overload, B.O.B. invites them to reflect on their own boundaries in the digital space.

The proces and technical approach

This project was developed as a group assignment, where each member contributed to different parts of the immersive experience.

  • The experience was built as a 360-degree VR environment, placing the viewer at the center of the overload.

  • We designed the visuals and pop-ups to mimic real-world media clutter from social media alerts to email spam and app notifications.

  • I contributed to both the conceptual development and the technical side, working on visual timing and interaction layers to create a build-up in intensity.

  • Sound design was essential: layered notification sounds, voiceovers, and overlapping media clips were used to heighten the sense of stress and confusion.

Together, we created a confronting and thought-provoking simulation of what it feels like to drown in digital noise.
